What You Need to Know
Renting is easier than buying, but you will need to jump through a few hoops.
In most cases you will need first month’s rent plus a deposit equal to or just below the first month’s rent.
A cleaning deposit is charged by many landlords and is usually around $250.
If pets are allowed, an additional pet deposit will be charged.
Credit report. Many rentals will check your credit. Your credit report in many cases doesn’t need to be stellar, but if you have defaulted on accounts, you may not qualify to rent.
In a nutshell, less responsibility.
As a renter, you are not responsible for the maintenance and upkeep, which can be costly. As well you will pay no property tax.
You won’t pay homeowner’s insurance either.
As a renter, you can leave when your lease is up. As a homeowner, moving requires going through the process of putting your house on the market, showing it, considering offers, and finally selling. If you think you may want to move in 6 months to a year, renting may be your best option.
